Total CMS vs Webflow
Webflow's designer is the best visual building tool there is, and nothing here replaces it. But two questions are worth asking before you commit a client's site to it: what can you actually take with you, and who is Webflow building for now?

Credit first, because it is deserved. Webflow's Designer gives real control over the CSS box model rather than a page-builder abstraction, its hosting runs on CloudFront and Fastly with automatic SSL and backups on every tier, and Webflow University is the best free web-design education anywhere. If the visual canvas is how you want to work, nothing here replaces it.
The first thing worth knowing is how code export actually works, because almost nobody explains it. Webflow's own words: "Code export is only available on Workspace plans — that is, Site plans do not include the ability to export your site's code." Paying to host your site never entitles you to your code. That needs a separate paid Workspace plan on top.
And what exports is the presentation layer, not the site. Their documentation lists what does not come with you: CMS content and functionality, User Accounts, Ecommerce, password protection, form submission processing, site search, code components, and every locale except your primary one. In their words, "Collection lists will show the empty state, and Collection pages won't show any content that's bound to Collection fields." You can host the export anywhere with no attribution — it is simply a static shell. And it is one-way: "If you export your code, it can't be reimported."
The second thing is who Webflow is building for now, and this is not speculation. On 13 May 2026 Webflow merged the CMS and Business plans into one $25 Premium tier and introduced a Team plan at $2,500 a month with an annual contract. The ladder that read $12 / $16 / $36 in 2021 now reads $15 / $25 / $2,500. Their CEO wrote in May 2026 that the company is "doubling down on the shift we started over two years ago." Localization, page branching and their AEO product all shipped Enterprise-first, and Logic and User Accounts — the closest things Webflow had to a backend — were deprecated in December 2024.
If you are a freelancer or small studio who feels like the product is moving away from you, that is a documented change and not your imagination.

When to choose Webflow instead
Webflow is exceptional at what it does. Choose Webflow if:
- You design visually and want real CSS control. The Designer is not a page builder with a box model bolted on — it is genuine control over layout, and nothing self-hosted replaces it.
- You want hosting you never think about. CloudFront and Fastly, automatic SSL, DDoS protection and one-click backups, included on every tier.
- You are handing sites to clients and do not want to front hosting. Clients can put their own card on file for their site plan, and free client seats exist on Freelancer and Agency plans.
- You want a marketing site that a marketing team will run. That is precisely who Webflow is building for now, and they are building well.
- You value the learning ecosystem. Webflow University is best-in-class and free, with a community in the hundreds of thousands.
- You need enterprise compliance. SOC 2 Type II, SSO, SCIM provisioning and granular access controls.
When Total CMS fits better
Total CMS is the better fit when:
- You want to own the site outright. Not an exported shell — the working site, the CMS, the content, the templates, running on hosting you choose.
- You do not want your code behind a second subscription. Getting your code out of Webflow requires a paid Workspace plan on top of paying to host it.
- You need the CMS to survive the move. Webflow's export leaves Collection content behind, and a re-import is not possible at all.
- You need server-side logic or memberships. Webflow deprecated Logic and User Accounts in December 2024; Total CMS has automations and access groups built in.
- You are running many client sites. A one-time licence per domain rather than a recurring site plan per site, plus workspace, plus seats.
- Your content should not have a ceiling. No item limits, and no automatic plan upgrade when traffic spikes two months running.
- You want content in git. Editorial changes review in a pull request and roll back with your code.

Common questions
Can I export my Webflow site and host it myself?
Partly, and with a gate most people do not expect. Code export requires a paid Workspace plan — paying for a Site plan to host your site does not include it. What you get is HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images, which you can host anywhere with no attribution. What you do not get is CMS content and functionality, User Accounts, Ecommerce, password protection, form processing, site search, code components, or any locale except your primary one. Collection lists render empty. CMS content exports separately as per-collection CSV.
Is Webflow moving upmarket?
Yes, and it is documented rather than rumoured. In May 2026 Webflow merged the CMS and Business plans into a single $25 Premium tier and introduced a Team plan at $2,500 a month with an annual contract — a ladder that read $12, $16 and $36 in 2021. Their CEO wrote that the company is "doubling down on the shift we started over two years ago." Is it true you have to pay for a site plan and a workspace plan?
Not always, and the blanket version of this claim is wrong. The free Starter Workspace supports unlimited paid hosted sites, so a solo operator with one live site pays only the site plan. You do pay on both axes once you need code export, custom code on staging sites, more than two staging sites, shared libraries, roles and permissions, or more than one full seat — which covers most agencies and any team.
What happens to my site if I stop paying Webflow?
It comes down. Cancelling a Site plan removes your custom domains and unpublishes the site from both the custom domain and the webflow.io staging subdomain at the end of the billing period. Cancelling mid-term still bills the remainder of the term. If you have exported your code beforehand, that static copy keeps working on your own server.
Can I build logged-in areas or backend logic in Webflow?
Not as first-party features any more. Webflow deprecated Logic, its no-code automation product, and User Accounts, its membership system, in December 2024. Webflow Cloud can run a Next.js or Astro application on Cloudflare Workers, but that is a separate app you deploy from GitHub rather than server-side logic inside your site.
Should I move off Webflow?
Not if the Designer is why you use it — you would be giving up the best visual building tool there is, and Total CMS expects you to write templates. The case for moving is about ownership and direction: you want the working site rather than a static export, you need server-side logic or memberships, you are paying per site across a portfolio of client work, or you have concluded the product is being built for someone other than you.
